Manasbal Lake is often celebrated as one of the most stunning lakes in Kashmir, yet it remains relatively unknown compared to its more famous counterparts. Dubbed the “Supreme Gem of all lakes in Kashmir,” this lake is a visual delight, resembling a picturesque postcard. One of its most enchanting features is the lotus blooms that adorn its edges during July and August. Although we visited in April and missed the lotus season, Manasbal Lake still offered us a captivating experience.
Mountain Peaks and Serenity at Manasbal Lake
The name “Manasbal” is inspired by the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet, which may explain its tranquil ambiance. Unlike the bustling Dal Lake in Srinagar, Manasbal is a serene retreat, situated just 30 km from the city, adding to its allure.
Location of Manasbal Lake
Manasbal Lake is situated in Safapora, a town in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, approximately 32 km from Srinagar. It can be visited on the way to Wular Lake, making it possible to explore both lakes in one trip.
Nestled in the Jhelum Valley, Manasbal Lake spans 2.81 square kilometers and reaches a depth of 13 meters.
A Visit to Manasbal Lake
Kashmir is renowned for its stunning lakes. While Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake in Srinagar are visually spectacular and Wular Lake is impressive, Manasbal Lake stands out for its tranquility and beauty. After exploring several lesser-known spots in Kashmir, we chose to visit Manasbal and Wular Lakes. We also intended to visit the Kheer Bhawani Temple, but it was closed to tourists during our visit.
We departed Srinagar early in the morning, and as we left the city, the scenery transformed into a picturesque landscape. The drive through Kashmir is delightful, offering endless views of stunning vistas. It took us nearly an hour to reach the lake.
First Impressions of Manasbal Lake
Upon arriving at the parking area, we caught our first glimpse of Manasbal Lake. The water appeared azure from a distance, and we could faintly see a mountain peak on the horizon. The adjacent garden provides access to the lake.
Manasbal Park
The garden, well-maintained and featuring gazebos for relaxation, leads directly to the lake. Manasbal Lake, with its expansive waters and majestic snow-capped peak in the background, is truly breathtaking.
Surrounding Villages
Mansbal Lake is bordered by the villages of Gratbal, Jarokbal, and Kondabal on three sides. It is replenished by precipitation, rainwater, and seasonal snow-fed rivers.
Local Activities
We observed local fishermen at work and children enjoying the lake. My favorite part was the panoramic view of the snow-capped peaks reflected in the lake’s blue waters.
Activities at Manasbal Lake
Besides appreciating the lake’s beauty, there are several activities to enjoy:
- Shikara Rides: Like Dal Lake, Mansbal offers shikara rides, with small islands adding to the charm. You can also explore one of these islands.
- Bird Watching: A haven for bird watchers, Manasbal Lake is home to various Himalayan bird species. A shikara ride provides an excellent opportunity for bird watching and photography.
- Water Sports: From May to August, water skiing and other water activities are available, introduced by the J & K Tourism Department to boost local tourism.
- Temple Ruins: Near the eastern shore, you’ll find the ruins of an ancient Hindu temple dating back to 800-900 AD. The temple’s remains include stone carvings, including a deity resembling Ganesha.
Visit the Mughal Gardens
Nearby, you can explore a Mughal garden commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan. This garden offers a spectacular view of both the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Lotuses at Manasbal Lake
Manasbal Lake is renowned for its lotuses, which bloom in July and August. The sight of pink lotus petals at the lake’s edges enhances its beauty. I hope to visit again during the lotus season to witness this natural spectacle.
Kheer Bhawani Temple
Located on a detour near Tula Mula, the Kheer Bhawani Temple is a significant pilgrimage site. The temple, situated in a spring, is revered by Kashmiri Pandits who offer milk and kheer to the deity.
How to Reach Manasbal Lake
Located in Safapora, Ganderbal district, Manasbal Lake is best accessed from Srinagar, about 32 km away. The route offers scenic views of the valleys and mountains. You can also visit Wular Lake from the same area.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Manasbal Lake is from July to October, when the weather is pleasant for water activities. To see the blooming lotuses, plan your visit in July or August.
Accommodation Near Manasbal Lake
While there are no hotels directly at the lake, the Whistling Woods Eco Resort in Ganderbal, about 12 km away, provides a comfortable stay.
Final Thoughts
Manasbal Lake is a beautiful destination in Kashmir, known for its serenity and scenic views. Although it faces challenges like pollution and weed growth, conservation efforts are underway to preserve its beauty.
