Things to Do in Gulmarg in 1 Day

Although we wanted to stay overnight, we opted for a day trip, planning to return in winter for an extended visit.

Starting early from Srinagar, we left the city and were soon greeted by the mountains. Our first stop was Magam, a small village on the way.

Gulmarg Arrival

Upon reaching Gulmarg, the bus stop and parking area were small, indicative of this hill station’s reliance on tourism. The area features numerous shops, eateries, guides, and ponies. Private cars are not permitted beyond this point.

Gulmarg Club House

At the parking area, guides and pony owners approached us, offering their services. While a pony ride can support the local economy, a guide is unnecessary as the attractions are well-marked. For those who enjoy walking, exploring on foot is a great option.

We arrived in Gulmarg by 9 AM and decided to explore on foot. Despite warnings from pony owners about distances, we pressed on, knowing the Gondola ride was scheduled for 11 AM. Our first stop was the Maharaja Palace.

1. Maharaja Palace

The Maharaja Palace, close to the parking area, was once the residence of King Ranbir Singh of Kashmir. Though its grandeur has diminished with time, the palace remains picturesque, surrounded by tall pine trees.

The palace was closed during our visit, but a guard shared intriguing stories, including a rumor of it being haunted. The surrounding forest added to the palace’s mysterious allure.

2. Gulmarg Golf Course

The lush green of the Gulmarg Golf Course left me in awe. Originally developed by the British in 1911, this is one of the highest golf courses globally. The course was redesigned in 2011 and remains visually stunning.

3. St Mary’s Church

Nearby the Golf Course, St. Mary’s Church stands out with its Victorian architecture. Built in 1902 and renovated in 2013, the church’s grey stone walls are beautiful amid the meadows.

4. Gulmarg Gondola Ride

The Gulmarg Gondola is the highlight of the visit. This cable car, one of the world’s highest, takes you from Gulmarg to Apharwat Peak. The ride is a unique experience, with two phases: Phase 1 to Kongdori and Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak.

The Gondola Station is a 1.5 km walk from the parking area. Tickets can be purchased for either phase or both. The ride offers breathtaking views, with snow and pine forests visible from the cable car. At Kongdori, we enjoyed snowball fights and a snowmobile ride.

5. Maharani Temple

On our way back, we visited Maharani Temple, located on a small hillock. Built by Maharaja Hari Singh and dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is known for its royal connection. The temple’s priest is Muslim, reflecting the region’s religious harmony.
