Journey to Aru Valley: The Lesser-Known Delight near Pahalgam (Full Travel Guide)

Some destinations have a way of making you feel completely at ease and blissful, and Aru Valley in Kashmir is one of those places. Situated about 12 km from the more renowned Pahalgam, Aru is a quaint village surrounded by lush grasslands and stunning vistas. With our love for off-the-beaten-path locations, we opted to stay in Aru Valley instead of Pahalgam. Another factor in our decision was that we had previously explored Pahalgam during our Amarnath Yatra trek.

Meadows of Aru Valley

Aru Valley is a visual delight with its scenic views, majestic snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the backdrop, and a flowing mountain river. Unlike Pahalgam, Aru Valley offers tranquility and is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Additionally, Aru Valley serves as the starting point for various treks in Kashmir, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Aru Valley is simply enchanting. The village, nestled at the end of the valley and surrounded by pine trees, green hills, and expansive meadows, feels like a fairyland. We observed shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats, and horses grazing nearby. It truly seemed like a place where one could stay forever!

The village features a handful of homestays and guesthouses, a few small eateries, and some shops. The local residents are warm and welcoming, eager to share their humble abode with visitors. The area remains pristine, with a slower pace of life and friendly interactions among the villagers.

Aru Valley is somewhat disconnected from modern communication services, with only BSNL reportedly functioning. This makes it an ideal location for a digital detox. Our homestay owner had a BSNL connection but usually traveled to Pahalgam for better internet access.

The Allure of Pahalgam

Pahalgam is captivating from the moment you arrive. It boasts numerous attractions and has a bustling market area with hotels, resorts, and diverse dining options. However, it also means more tourists, noise, and traffic typical of popular destinations.

Both Pahalgam and Aru Valley offer unique experiences. Your choice of where to stay should align with your preferences. If you’re looking for a break from digital distractions, Aru Valley is highly recommended. You won’t be disappointed.

Our Experience at Aru Valley

The weather was quite gloomy when we departed from Srinagar, and it was raining upon our arrival in Pahalgam. The continuous rain had been a bit frustrating, as we eagerly awaited sunny weather to explore more.

Pahalgam to Aru Valley

The journey from Pahalgam to Aru Valley is picturesque, winding through mountain roads flanked by towering cedar, pine, and oak trees, with the Lidder River accompanying us. By the time we reached Aru Valley, the rain had intensified. We had booked our stay at the JKTDC Tourist Bungalow, but upon arrival, we discovered the bungalow was closed, and there was no caretaker present. Locals helped contact the caretaker, who informed us of the power outage due to a damaged cable that hadn’t been repaired for months.

Despite the initial setback, we chose to stay at a lovely homestay near the village’s small marketplace. The cozy accommodation offered spectacular mountain views from the rooms, and since we were the only guests, we had the privilege of selecting the best room.

The next morning, as I drew back the curtains, I was greeted with breathtaking views of the cleared sky and lush greenery. The rain had ceased, and the sky was adorned with fluffy clouds drifting over the mountains.

We wasted no time and ventured out to explore Aru Valley. It is best explored on foot. There are a few day hikes available, and for those less inclined to hike, pony rides are an option to visit various points of interest.

Our first destination was the Green Top, a challenging climb that rewards you with panoramic views of the mountains and the village. The steep final stretch was arduous, but the vistas from the top made the effort worthwhile.

After our hike, we continued to explore the valley on foot. We visited the J & K Tourism Park near the Tourist Bungalow, where we encountered the caretaker arranging for power restoration. He offered us a warm cup of kahwa, a local tea.

We spent our time in Aru Valley enjoying the serenity and nature. Although we had planned to visit Pahalgam on our return, the heavy rain thwarted our plans. Nevertheless, our time in Aru Valley was delightful and fulfilling.
