Reaching Gangtok

Sikkim has recently opened Pakyong Airport, situated around 22 km south of Gangtok. Pakyong Airport, one of India’s highest airports at an altitude of 4,646 feet, currently has flights from Kolkata and New Delhi. Private taxis can be hired from Pakyong to Gangtok, taking about an hour.
For budget-friendly options, shared jeeps from Siliguri SNT Bus Stand and buses from Siliguri Bus Stand are available, though jeeps are generally more comfortable.
Gangtok is roughly 98 km from Darjeeling, with a travel time of 3.5 to 4 hours, and 75 km from Kalimpong, which takes about 3 hours by car. Private cars are available for hire from these locations to Gangtok and vice versa.

Deorali Taxi Stand
Deorali Taxi Stand, also known as Mainline Taxi Stand, is the busiest taxi stand situated at Deorali Bazar on NH10, about 2 km from Gangtok’s town center. Commercial taxis from outside Sikkim are restricted beyond this point. From Deorali, you can find both small taxis and larger SUVs for sightseeing in Gangtok, as well as shared sumos to Siliguri, NJP, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong. Taxis to Siliguri are available daily until 5:30 PM.
Vajra Taxi Stand
Located near Vajra Cinema Hall, Vajra Taxi Stand offers shared jeeps to North Sikkim destinations such as Mangan, Phodong, Kabi Lungchok, and occasionally Lachen and Lachung. Note that a separate permit is required for visiting protected areas in North Sikkim. Private taxis can be booked here, with drivers often assisting in obtaining necessary permits.
M G Marg Taxi Stand
Located below M G Marg, this stand provides taxis, both private and shared, to destinations in West and South Sikkim, including Pelling, Geyzing, Rinchenpong, Jorethang, Ravangla, and Namchi. Shared cabs and taxis are also available near the Children’s Park close to M G Marg.
City Buses
There are no city buses within Gangtok, so taxis are essential for sightseeing. However, SNT (Sikkim Nationalized Transport) buses operate between Gangtok and Siliguri and Kalimpong, with the main SNT Bus Stop near Paljor Stadium Road and another at Deorali Bazar.
