Exploring Yusmarg: Your Complete Guide to Kashmir’s Hidden Paradise

Yusmarg Travel Guide: We were left in awe. Our speechlessness was a testament to the extraordinary sight before us. It’s not every day that we encounter such pure and breathtaking beauty. Kashmir truly lives up to its reputation as a paradise on earth. After spending time in Srinagar and Aru Valley, arriving at Yusmarg felt like standing in front of an endless expanse of meadows.

The landscape was a vibrant green, enhanced by the recent rainfall. Although the trails were muddy, the meadows appeared rejuvenated. Dewdrops glistened on the grass, and a few horses grazed peacefully in the distance. This scene captured our hearts.

Like the rest of Kashmir, Yusmarg greeted us with its pine forest trails, flowing streams, and friendly local Gujjars. The local children approached us with wide-eyed curiosity and innocent smiles.

Despite the language barrier, as we don’t speak Kashmiri, the warm smiles conveyed a lot. Our time in Yusmarg was indeed a delightful experience. Learning about Sheikh Noor ud-Din Noorani, also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam, at Charar-e-Sharif was a humbling experience.

Yusmarg, situated at an elevation of 2396 meters (7861 feet), is a serene retreat. There’s a fascinating legend about the origin of its name, suggesting that Jesus Christ might have passed through here, making “Yus” a short form of “Youza” or Jesus and “marg” meaning meadows. Hence, Yusmarg could translate to “Meadow of Christ.”

Another less popular theory is that Yusmarg is derived from “Roosmarg,” meaning “meadow of musk deer.”

This picturesque meadow is also the starting point for several treks in Kashmir. Some trails are easy and can be undertaken independently, while others require guides.

Where is Yusmarg?

Yusmarg, or Yousmarg, is located in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, approximately 50 km from Srinagar. The JKDTC Bungalow and huts offer accommodation in the meadow, providing a peaceful retreat with minimal human activity.

Our Visit

Our trip to Kashmir was laid-back, having already explored Aru Valley and Srinagar. Without a fixed plan, we were ready to visit Doodhpathri when our local friend Aarif suggested it. However, after navigating tricky turns and realizing we were closer to Yusmarg, we decided to visit Yusmarg instead.

Charar-e-Sharif Town

Yusmarg is at the end of the road from Charar-e-Sharif, known for its Sufi poet Sheik-ul-Alam’s Dargah. As we approached, the air grew cooler and the scenery more lush. We soon reached the Yusmarg Development Authority sign and the Yusmarg Lake, though photography was restricted there.

Yusmarg JKTDC Bungalow – Where to Stay at Yusmarg

Arriving at Yusmarg, we found it charming but decided not to stay overnight despite earlier plans. The meadows, bordered by hills and pine forests, were serene. Behind the JKTDC Tourist bungalow is a CRPF barrack, and at the parking area, a signboard displayed trekking trails and pony ride rates.

Trek to Doodhganga River

We were perhaps the only tourists there. We chose to trek to Doodhganga River, just 2 km from the parking area. Unlike Gulmarg, the horsemen and guides were not insistent and shared their stories instead.

Offbeat Places in Kashmir

We met an elderly local who reminisced about his days selling Kashmiri shawls in West Bengal. During our trek to Doodhganga, we encountered nomadic Gujjars and enjoyed the beautiful, powerful river.
